Last February, I attended the launch event for the new Spongebob Squarepants Collection by Alpha Toys. Featuring vinyl figures, mini figures, role play, and more, this collection launched shortly thereafter to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of everyone’s favorite talking yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea.

One of the highlights for me in this collection was the Masterpiece Memes, a series of larger vinyl figures that celebrate popular scenes from the show that people have made popular with memes online. Those they have no articulation, these iconic poses from the beloved characters in the show makes this line a very popular one. One of my personal favorites is Imagination Spongebob, which features Spongebob creating a rainbow. Let’s take a closer look.

First off, if you are one that is into keeping your vinyl figures in packaging, this line is a great one to get, seeing as it has a very ample window box in the packaging design. This makes it so you can still enjoy the figure even if it never gets any fresh air. However, I am not like that in most circumstances, so let’s open things up.

I appreciate the sculpt on this figure a lot. It has some wonderful detail, especially in Spongebob’s expression. I also like how the rainbow (which is not permanently attached) is translucent, similar to the meme itself.

Just a small taste of the different ways the image was taken to next level as a meme.

Overall, this is a great job by the Alpha Toys team in creating a fun collectible for both children and kids alike. Retailing for about $20 each, the Masterpiece Memes would make a great gift for those who grew up visiting Bikini Bottom after school or on weekends. I have spotted these vinyl figures in Target locations more recently, but I am sure they are also at different retailers around the country, or even online.
