From the massive realm contained within Final Fantasy comes a former SOLDIER, an arrogant swordsman and our glow-eyed hero, Cloud Strife. Created by Rask Opticon, Cloud stands alone on his battlefield, surrounded by all six pieces of his intricately sculpted Fusion Sword, equipped in the gear of a SOLDIER, and ready to take on whatever is thrown at him.
Every pieces of this figure, from glowing base through flickering LED-filled swords through Cloud’s spiky hair, was sculpted from scratch. Opticon mentioned that the swords especially were a challenge, noting that “there was a lot of intricate cutting in some of the swords and what made it even harder, there were two sets of swords that had to look the same.” The LEDs add to the drama and excitement, elevating the figure from a simple toy to a tension-filled moment in time with one spotlight on our hero, glowing swords around him flickering hungrily, itching to be swung, and in the dark beyond surely an enemy waiting to pounce.
The figure Opticon created is less a sculpture and more a story, a 3D illustration stopped in one instant and surrounded by “what if” potential, balancing on the edge of a knife before plunging into the grand finale. It’s a bookmark in a book just before getting to epic climactic battle because if you keep reading you know it will keep you awake for another hour. What started as a plain DIY POP ended up as a masterful fusion of technological and artistic skills in one beautiful testament to Final Fantasy fandom and, boy, does it have a story to tell you.
