Welcome to Flashback Friday where I discuss pops from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anything pop related to the MCU is up for discussion including films and television series. Let’s jump right in with this week’s discussion which was chosen by the Great Flaboozin. Hela from the Thor: Ragnarok set is this week’s featured MCU Pop.

Discussion: Hela was first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Ragnarok which was released in November 2017. The film is the best reviewed Thor flick by a wide margin and brought in the most box office dollars within the Hemsworth led franchise. When Cate Blanchett was cast as Hela I remember thinking that we’ll get good back-to-back villains following Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. She did a fantastic job in the role and really from the start you knew she was a bad apple. I suppose killing Odin so early and destroying Asgard made it easy for fans to get behind Thor’s team of misfits. I’m a big fan of Hela so I’m hoping that she’ll come back in a future entry into the ever growing Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hela
#251 Hela Target

As of April 2018 there are only two Hela pops that have been released. This one is her unmasked version which you can see above. The likeness and design look better than I was expecting. Funko really did a great job. Looking at her in the film I can’t really see any other designs they could do for the character. I think the only changes they could make are different poses or go old school and do black and white or metallic versions.

Some of you may be wondering how you can get your hands on this Hela pop because it looks great. Well, as you can see from the image above she’s a Target exclusive. And for many of us who try and get those Target exclusives it can be quite the process. I’d highly recommend trying to order it from Amazon, eBay, or picking it up from our Facebook group. Trying to find this in stores at the time of release was a huge hassle and now it’s probably impossible. Save yourself a headache and get it online. The price is fairly reasonable between $15.00 and $20.00. Anything over $20.00 you’re overpaying right now but I expect it to go higher over the next couple of years.

Fun Fact: Cate Blanchett accepted a role in this movie to please her children, who are Marvel Comics fans. Blanchett’s eldest son Dashiell John Upton suggested she take the role of Hela, saying it’d be a career boost.

Be the first to comment with the correct answers to both questions and win. If you become the weekly champion you must choose a Pop within the MCU that has not been featured in the Flashback Friday series and post it after your answers. The questions are from Thor: Ragnarok.

Q1: Which actor portrays Loki in the play within the film?

Q2: What’s the name of the “Sorcerer Supreme” who has a small part in the film?

I hope you enjoyed this week’s column. Please check back next week for a brand new Flashback Friday. Excelsior!

  1. @Sean – You are correct. Unfortunately you didn’t list your pick for next week.
