Marvel’s favorite genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist is POPping in this week to show off his style and smarts as he suits up in more ways than one. Pulling his inspiration from the screen and the Hot Toys version of the same scene, Carlo Gomez of iGeek Customs created this POP figure of Tony Stark based on Stark’s wild entrance into Stark Expo, the gantry suiting him down from his flyboy Iron Man duds to tuxedoed sophistication.
Like Tony Stark’s exploration of the sciences, Gomez’s interest in POP Vinyls was due to its virtual limitlessness. “Unlike most designer toys,” Gomez said, “they have limits to the characters due to some restrictions on their parts, build, shape, etc., while pop vinyls can be anything or any character that you want.” Including the character’s associated rides and environments in this POP art umbrella, and with the knowledge that some characters will never be mass produced by Funko directly, Gomez began to customize his own POP figures. Since his start with POPs he’s created figures from Johnny Bravo of Cartoon Network fame to Lobo from DC Comics.
Gomez’s utilization of various tools and materials, his mix of airbrushing and finely painted details and weathering, bring this scene to life, with Stark caught in the middle of a seamless transition between Avenger and CEO, man and machine. We’re just looking forward to him transitioning onto our shelves!
