Well, thief! This week’s feature can smell you, hear you breathe, feel your air if, like a certain Hobbit, you traipse into his dragon lair. Created by Jeff Jongko of Dreams of POP, here stands Smaug the Stupendous, the Magnificent, the Unassessably Wealthy, crouching in POP form over his hoard of gold.
Jeff started customizing POPs in response to a custom challenge presented by a local comic book store. Using his previous modeling skills, Jeff created his first custom POP, Adeptus Mechanicus, and won the contest. Since then he has tackled characters from Star Wars to G.I. Joe and beyond, each featuring incredibly detailed sculptures and painting.
Inspired by Weta Collectible’s Smaug the Terrible statue, Jeff used the same care and attention to detail that he’s given all his other customs – note that the scale pattern continues along the new lengthened neck on the body and the addition of the Arkenstone in Smaug’s treasure trove – to transform what had been a damaged 6” Smaug POP into this crouching terror.
In true rags to riches fashion (Cue rimshot. Because gold.), what started as an unboxed, unwanted, and damaged POP found its home and purpose standing over his glittery stash, and we couldn’t think of a happier ending for this rejected POP!
