For years when I visited Walt Disney World and specifically DIsney-MGM Studios (now known as Disney Hollywood Studios), the first attraction that I had to ride was Star Tours. Your Star Tours captain was RX-24 who became quickly known as Rex. In addition, he was voiced by Pee Wee Herman.

Here’s a video so you can see how Star Tours was originally.

Later on Star Tours was upgraded and offered C3-P0 as the accidental captain and Old Rex got removed although you could find him in the pre-show apparently being boxed up because he was defective. A sort of “homage” to Star Tours Past .

At the D23 in 2017, Galaxy’s Edge was announced as coming to Walt Disney World and Disneyland. While most people were excited about a “Star Wars Land” with cool rides, one small tidbit in the announcement made my heart warm. Rex was returning this time known as DJ R3X with Pee Wee Herman reprising the voice of the quirky robot.

Disney Imagineer Scott Trowbridge announced at D23 Expo 2017 that Rex will serve as the DJ in the cantina at “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.”

“He’s an awesome DJ. I hear he’s really really great. In fact, I’m certain he’s 100% very very skilled at his job. Nothing’s going to go wrong,” Trowbridge joked. “I mean, what could go wrong? This series of droids is known for their expertise and their grace under pressure.”

This past weekend at Star Wars Celebration, it was announced that Funko would commemorate DJ R3X’s return to Disneyland and Walt Disney World with a Galaxy’s Edge exclusive Pop!

It’s nice to see Funko and Disney commemorate a small part of Disney history in Pop form and make it special for those who visit Galaxy’s Edge. While I would love the original figure design as well, I will most definitely add this one to my collection. What do you think about this newest Star Wars Pop?
