Welcome to Flashback Friday: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series you’ll get a review and discussion on some of your favorite Pops and Dorbz from the MCU. Here, we really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming. Hawkeye from the Age of Ultron set is this week’s choice for discussion.
Discussion: Hawkeye is a very interesting character. He’s a super hero with no special or enhanced abilities. He’s a highly trained assassin according to what we’ve learned in the films. You know he’s a very capable and highly adaptable person having been on several missions with Black Widow and holding his own against other members of the team in Captain America: Civil War.
Compared to the other Avengers I think Hawkeye is the least popular character on the team. This is easily determined by looking at how many Hawkeye Pops from the MCU have been created compared to the other characters. Hawkeye was a huge villain under Loki’s control in the first Avengers film and yet he was not part of the set. Hawkeye has one Pop in the Age of Ultron set and one Pop that was available exclusively in a four pack for Captain America: Civil War. Only Nick Fury has less Pops for being in a large amount of films. Hawkeye has been in Thor, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War and he only has two Pops. Hopefully, going into the two Avengers: Infinity War sets Hawkeye will get some better treatment.
Even though Hawkeye was released a couple of years ago he’s still available for retail pricing. At the time of release he could be found at Hot Topic, Barnes and Noble, GameStop, FYE, Target, Wal-Mart, and wherever else Pops were sold. Nowadays, it will probably be a little difficult to find him in stores. Your best bet is Amazon or eBay. Any price point around $10.00 is what you should be looking for. You’ll definitely want to check out our Facebook Group at this link if you’re in search of Hawkeye. Users can buy, sell, and trade within the Funko community.
Avengers: Age of Ultron Set: The Age of Ultron set contains 17 Pops with exclusives from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, FYE, GameStop, Hot Topic, Marvel Collector Corps, San Diego Comic Con 2015, and Target. There are 2 Black Widow, 2 Captain America, 1 Hawkeye, 3 Hulk, 1 Hulkbuster, 2 Iron Man, 1 Scarlet Witch, 1 Thor, 2 Ultron, and 3 Vision. It seems crazy that the first Guardians of the Galaxy set has eight more Pops than this set. Kind of surprising to me. I think Nick Fury, Quicksilver, and War Machine could’ve all been easily added to this set. They could’ve also done some of the Avengers in plain clothes similar to when everyone was hiding out at Clint’s house.
Description/Review: Hawkeye is donning a more traditional suit from the comics. It’s a full body suit which covers his arms unlike in the first Avengers film where they were exposed. The jacket is long sleeved and the majority is black. The jacket does have some purple in the front going down from the upper chest to below the waist. There’s also some purple around the top of the arm on each side. Purple spreads across the left arm. There’s a red line coming from the top of the shoulder going downwards into the black body armor on each arm. I’m not sure if it serves any purpose. It looks like each hand has some protection for the constant firing of arrows. The pants are black as well as the boots. He’s also holding a high tech black bow in his right hand.
The suit on Hawkeye looks great! It matches what we see in the film really well. From what I can remember Hawkeye does not wear this particular suit throughout the entire film. He’s definitely wearing it during the final action sequence in Sokovia against Ultron and his army of bots. I’m hopeful that in the upcoming Avengers films that Hawkeye not only gets a Pop but we get some variants. Even a battle damaged suit would be awesome. I’m just saying when Crossbones is barely in Civil War and gets three Pops and none for Winter Soldier and Hawkeye is in four films with only two Pops something is wrong.
What’s next? Most people are expecting Hawkeye to show up in Avengers: Infinity War which is going to be a huge film in terms of scale, cast, characters, and box office. Look for the first film to have 30+ Pops including variants, a ton of exclusives, and a lot of convention coverage. This will be the largest MCU set ever until the second film gets released. Of course, it’s always possible Hawkeye shows up in Spider-Man: Homecoming or Thor: Ragnarok. If that’s the case, don’t be surprised if you see a Hawkeye Pop appear before next year.
