You’re traveling down a worm hole, zipping through time and space. All of a sudden there’s a jump. A bump. The engine whines a high-pitched, ear-wrenching groan, and you feel the ship slipping sideways. The world around you is pressing down ever heavier.
POP!
Flattened. Compressed. Deflated. You are entering a world of only two dimensions.
Ok, so that may be a bit of a far-fetched reality. But while that scenario may be unlikely, these paintings created by Juan Lopez are so on point they look like a dimension was simply sucked away from the real deal.
A fellow collector, Lopez decided to take a slightly flatter approach with his foray into custom POPs, combining his past work in acrylic paintings with his love for the adorable vinyls. His work frequently takes a more dynamic spin, as well, breathing motion into the images.
“The poses for me seem a little too stiff on the pops, so I just started drawing them in action poses to go with the backgrounds I used,” Lopez said. “I didn’t want them to look motionless in the paintings.”
Lopez’ use of traditional mediums – canvas, acrylic paints, and a good old pencil – provides us with a delightful mix of skilled artistry and cute collectable that any kid or kid-at-heart would love to hang on their wall. All without needing to slip into an alterate universe.
