Hello true believers and welcome to Flashback Friday where I discuss Pops from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anything Pop related to the MCU is up for discussion including films and television series. Let’s jump right in with this week’s discussion. Captain America from the Captain America: Civil War set is this week’s featured MCU Pop.
After discussing the final action sequence from Civil War last week, I thought it would be fitting to move onto Steve this week. The majority of Steve’s arc is tied with Bucky starting with The First Avenger. After he realizes that Bucky is still alive in The Winter Soldier he does everything he can to try and break him of his mind control thanks to H.Y.D.R.A. When Steve finds out that Bucky is being framed for the terrorist attack at the summit he immediately comes to the defense of Bucky and helps him escape. Living with the knowledge that Bucky had killed Tony’s parents is a choice Steve made to spare Tony that pain. Once Tony finds out the truth he becomes so engrossed with rage towards Bucky that he wants to kill him to avenge his parent death. With Steve hiding this information from Tony he feels completely betrayed by his friend. This eventually leads to that final action sequence where Steve is protecting his best friend at all costs. Steve doesn’t want to hurt Tony but he’ll do what he has to for Bucky. Steve always fights for what he thinks is right even if it costs it costs him dearly in the end. The fight wasn’t easy for any of them and the emotional toll it takes on Steve is very telling.
This Captain America is in an “action pose” on one knee with his right fist ready for a punch. The shield is being taken back and ready to throw towards an enemy at a moment’s notice. Personally, I don’t think it relates to what Steve did in the film and it’s a little disappointing for me. I would have much rather scene a pose where the shield is being thrown or held out in front of him for protection.
Captain America is numbered 137 in the Marvel character master set. This version was an exclusive to GameStop and EB Games in 2016. GameStop exclusives are generally much easier to get a hold of than Target exclusives such as the Winter Soldier from last week. He’s part of an 18 Pop Captain America: Civil War set. If you check out the brand new Funko collection tracker app you’ll see that as of this publishing, the Captain America is only going for $13.00. I’d expect this Pop to increase over the coming years because it is vaulted and the possible fate of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame.
Answer the trivia question below and choose an MCU Pop that I hasn’t been covered in a Flashback Friday article. Leave your answer and choice in the comments section. If your answer is correct I will choose a random person with the correct response and their choice will be featured in a future article. This week’s trivia will come from Captain America: Civil War.
What line does Steve say to Tony in the final action sequence that’s a callback to what he said to a bully in Captain America: The First Avenger?
I hope you enjoyed this week’s column. Check back next week for a brand new Flashback Friday and don’t forget to join our Facebook group. Excelsior!
The line he told Tony was, “I could do this all day.”
