Welcome to Flashback Friday: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series you’ll get a discussion and brief review on some of your favorite Pops from the MCU. Here, we really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming. Scarlet Witch from the Avengers: Age of Ultron set is this week’s choice for discussion.
Discussion: Scarlet Witch played by Elizabeth Olson was first introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. At the beginning of the film she was an antagonist for our heroes along with her brother Quicksilver and Ultron. Wanda Maximoff has some very interesting abilities. Obviously her origin was altered from the comics because Marvel Studios doesn’t have access to any of her X-Men heritage. Her abilities were manifested by Loki’s scepter which contained one of the all-powerful Infinity Stones. She has many powers including mind control, nightmares or fears can be given to specific people, force fields, and some kind of telekinetic bursts. Once Wanda realizes Ultron’s dastardly plans she joins up with the Avengers and has been developing her powers with the help of the team. Hopefully she’ll get to really showcase her powers in Avengers: Infinity War.
The Age of Ultron set was very large at the time. It included eighteen Pops and they came in waves. I believe Scarlet Witch came in the second wave. Scarlet Witch was one of the last Pops in the set to be revealed and released. I’m curious if it had anything to do with the shared film rights of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver from 20th Century Fox. There was a good amount of variety in this set which is always nice to have. I feel like they could’ve added Nick Fury, War Machine, Baron Von Strucker, and a few variations of costume to some of the characters. Obviously Quicksilver would’ve made the most sense to get a Pop but I feel like character rights were in play in some capacity. Perhaps Funko will give us a Quicksilver Pop one day.
Scarlet Witch is not an expensive Pop so it should be relatively easy to add to your collection. She was released in 2015 and has been under $10.00 for many months. During release she was available wherever Pops were sold including Barnes and Noble, FYE, GameStop, Hot Topic, Target, and Walmart. I don’t expect her price to go up anytime soon unless she’s a casualty in Avengers: Infinity War or she becomes vaulted which is unlikely given the year of release. Look for the Scarlet Witch Pop on Amazon, eBay, and our Facebook group which can be found here for all of your buying, selling, and trading needs.
Description/Review: Scarlet Witch has long brown hair that almost goes the full length of her back. She has large black bracelets around her wrists. She’s wearing a red or scarlet jacket over a blackish and grayish dress that’s above the knees. It looks like she’s wearing two different necklaces. One is very short with a red pendant. The other is much longer with a blue pendant. Her outfit is finished with long, knee high black boots. When looking at the Scarlet Witch Pop and Scarlet Witch from Age of Ultron side by side they look very similar. The only difference that really stands out to me is the color of the dress. In the film it’s all black while the Pop definitely has a shade of gray included. Overall, it’s a very solid film to Pop adaption of a brand new character.
What’s next? The next appearance for Scarlet Witch should be Avengers: Infinity War which will be released in North American cinemas in May 2018. I’d look for her to get at least one Pop. Perhaps more if she has a big costume change. If she survives Infinity War she should be in Avengers 4 as well. I don’t expect to see her in Thor: Ragnarok or Black Panther. I hope the Scarlet Witch love will get stronger for the upcoming films because she’s a really cool character and deserves to have some sweet variant Pops.
