Welcome to Flashback Friday: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series you’ll get a discussion and brief review on some of your favorite Pops and Dorbz from the MCU. Here, we really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming. Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen and Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil set is this week’s choice for discussion.
Discussion: Back in 2013/2014 there were discussions regarding Disney striking a deal with Netflix to create original content for their Marvel characters related to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. April 2015 was the launch date for the first show in a series of shows that were designed to showcase the darker side of the MCU. Daredevil starring Charlie Cox as the titular hero was up first. The show debuted to great fanfare and critical praise becoming a huge success for Netflix and Marvel Studios. Due to Daredevil’s success the fans have since enjoyed Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and a second season of Daredevil. With confirmed second seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, a third season of Daredevil, and a first season for the Punisher, and the Defenders debuting in August it looks like Marvel Studios is enjoying a massive triumph with their Netflix MCU lineup.
Due to the success of Daredevil it was only a matter of time before Funko started releasing Pop sets of our favorite Marvel Netflix shows. Daredevil received a Pop set and Dorbz set in 2016. The Pop set only consisted of four Pops which included Daredevil in his ninja outfit, Daredevil in his black and red outfit, Matt Murdock which is today’s selection, and Wilson Fisk who you can read about here. Pops in this set are numbered 119, 120, 121, and 122 within the entire Marvel Pop series. Matt Murdock is 121 and probably my favorite Pop in the set. Obviously, Funko did not include as many Pops as they could have. Noticeably missing are Elektra, Stick, Foggy, Karen Paige, and Clare Temple. Hopefully we’ll see more of these characters show up in future sets because they are very important to Matt and the show.
There were no store exclusives for the four Pops in the Daredevil set. They were widely released and could be picked up wherever Funko products are sold. Personally, I saw the most at GameStop and Hot Topic. If you’re interested in owning the Matt Murdock Pop you can purchase it on Amazon or eBay for the reasonable retail price of between $8.00 and $12.00. Trading or selling is also an option which can be performed via our Facebook group which can be found at this link. We have a great community and most people are willing to help if you have any questions. I’d get Matt Murdock and the others added to your collection while the prices are cheap. As time passes and new sets get released these Pops are likely to increase in value.
Description/Review: Matt has wavy light brown hair that’s parted on the right side which is very similar to how he looks in the show. There are sunglasses covering his eyes. The lenses are transparent red while the borders of his glasses are silver. Comparing the sunglasses to that of the show the silver borders should be a bit thinner. A sharp gray suit covers the rest of his body. The jacket is unbuttoned which allows us to see a white collared shirt with a black tie hanging down from his neck and a black belt around his waist. His shoes are as polished black as they’re going to get. He’s also holding his walking stick that’s red and white which doubles as a weapon if needed. His suit color is a little bit darker in the show but overall it’s a great Pop and it stays true to the character.
What’s next for Matt? Matt Murdock’s next appearance will be in the Defenders series which brings Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Stick, Claire Temple, and various other characters together to fight against a currently unnamed villain played by Sigourney Weaver. I’d also surmise that The Hand and Elektra will be involved. The Defenders is like an Avengers team up for the small screen. Netflix will debut the Defenders in August of 2017 followed by the first season of the Punisher in November 2017. Furthermore, Season 3 of Daredevil should start filming late this year or early next year for a 2018 debut. Is it wishful thinking that there’s a chance these characters show up in one of the next two Avengers films? Probably, but think about the possibilities.
