Welcome to Flashback Friday: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series you’ll get a review and discussion on some of your favorite Pops and Dorbz from the MCU. Here, we really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming. Drax from the Guardians of the Galaxy set is this week’s choice for discussion.
Discussion: This will be the second week in a row covering a character from Guardians of the Galaxy. I wanted to build some hype towards Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 leading up to its release on the first weekend of May. I will probably cover one more Guardian next week and then move on to a more random schedule.
Drax the Destroyer was first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy played by Dave Bautista of WWE fame. He steals a ton of scenes in the film with his lack of metaphor understanding and interactions with Rocket and Star-Lord. He went on to become a huge fan favorite but Funko just like with Gamora only gave him a single Pop for the first set. I think they missed an opportunity because he uses a lot of different weapons in the film and they could’ve easily done weapon variation Pops. Another area they could have focused on was the various pants he wore throughout the film. Look for Drax to get more love in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 set. He’s got one Pop already and smart money says there’s at least one more on the way.
Drax was widely distributed similar to Gamora upon initial release. He could be found in most stores that carried Pops such as Barnes and Noble, GameStop, and Hot Topic. Since we’re three years removed from the original release date it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to find Drax in stores. Once again, Amazon, eBay, and our Facebook group are your best options if you’re looking to add Drax to your collection. Our Facebook group can be found at this link with options to buy, sell, and trade with a fantastic community. The price on Drax has been rising very slowly. He’s currently right around $15.00 but don’t be surprised if you can pick one up for closer to $10.00. You should definitely pick up a Drax Pop now while the price is still reasonable.
Guardians of the Galaxy Set: Drax is numbered 50 in the set. The set includes 1 Cosmo, 1 Drax, 1 Gamora, 8 Groot, 1 Nebula, 5 Rocket, 1 Ronan, 3 Star-Lord, 2 Thanos, 1 The Collector, and 1 Yondu for a grand total of 25 Pops. The set also had a ton of exclusives including Amazon, Box Lunch, Entertainment Earth, Hot topic, Loot Crate, Previews, SDCC 2014, SDCC 2015, and the Specialty Series. This is a really great set for anyone that’s into Guardians. Plenty of Pops for the casual fan and for the hardcore collector.
Description/Review: The skin tone on Drax is more of a grayish color. The face has red tattoos surrounding the eyes which are black. There is no hair to speak of on his head. The upper is shirtless with a chiseled physique. More red tattoos cover a large portion of his chest, abdomen, and back. The tattoos are said to be the story of his life which would explain the amount and intricacy of each one. Each are is also covered in red tattoos. There is a knife like weapon in each hand with a black handle and a silver blade. The pants are a reflective black that look leather in nature. The boots are also black.
Overall, the Drax Pop is very simplistic but it works. Drax isn’t a very flashy character with loud outfits. The simplicity works for the character and works for the Pop. The color of the tattoos is quite plain which is a shame because they stand out much more in the film. The new Drax Pop addresses this issue by making the tattoos a brighter red. With brighter tattoos and cooler weapons I think newer Drax Pops will be pretty sweet that collectors would go crazy over.
What’s next? Drax has a very busy schedule. He’ll next be seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which gets released in North America next weekend. It’s been confirmed that he’ll play a role in Avengers: Infinity War and most likely appear in the Untitled Avengers 4. He should also be returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 along with the rest of the cast and James Gunn.
The newest Drax is numbered 200 and just like Gamora from last week is the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set. It also remains to be seen if we’ll be getting multiple versions of his character or if he’ll be a one of like the previous set.
