Welcome to Flashback Friday: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series you’ll get a review and discussion on some of your favorite Pops and Dorbz from the MCU. Here, we really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming. Gamora from the Guardians of the Galaxy set is this week’s choice for discussion.
Discussion: Fans of Gamora got their first look at her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Guardians of the Galaxy was released in the summer of 2014. Gamora as of the 2014 release was the only female member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Sadly, she and Drax drew the short straw for the set because they were the only members of the Guardians to not get multiple Pops. Hopefully with the upcoming sequel she’ll get at least two different Pops.
Gamora is numbered 51 in the Marvel line of Pops and she’s part of the Guardians of the Galaxy set. She’s a really cool character with an interesting backstory being the step daughter of the Mad Titan Thanos and the step sister of Nebula. Nebula has always been jealous of Gamora because she thinks Thanos favors her more. Her intense rivalry with Gamora is shown on screen during a fight sequence towards the end of the film. Look for their relationship to be explored much further in the highly anticipated sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
I have great news for anyone that wants to add the Gamora Pop to their collection. She was widely released and could be found in most stores that carry Pops. I saw her most recently in December at Barnes and Noble. You may still find a few every now and then but she’s becoming difficult to track down in stores. Amazon and eBay will be your best bet to try and add one to your collection. She’s been hovering around $20.00 for the last couple of months but you can definitely pick her up for $12.00 – $15.00. You can also check our Facebook group which can be found at this link. Buying, selling, and trading are allowed and it’s good way to save some money by trading.
Guardians of the Galaxy Set: This is one of the largest sets in the MCU. There’s so many variations of Groot and Rocket which really add up. The set includes 1 Cosmo, 1 Drax, 1 Gamora, 8 Groot, 1 Nebula, 5 Rocket, 1 Ronan, 3 Star-Lord, 2 Thanos, 1 The Collector, and 1 Yondu for a grand total of 25 Pops. The set also had a ton of exclusives including Amazon, Box Lunch, Entertainment Earth, Hot topic, Loot Crate, Previews, SDCC 2014, SDCC 2015, and the Specialty Series. This is a very large set and I feel like the second set will have closer to 40 Pops when all is said and done.
Description/Review: Gamora’s skin is a lighter shade of green. Her face has what looks like hand drawn shapes above the eyes, the center of the forehead, and on the cheeks. The ones above the eyes look like eyebrows. The two in the center of the face remind me of Mantis if her antennas were lower on her face. The eyes are black and include eyelashes on one side of each eye. There is some yellow or lime green eyeliner above each eye. Her hair starts darker on the center of the head and as it gets closer to her shoulders the color turns pink and purple.
Her outfit is mostly black with a hints of blue streaks coming from above the shoulder going all the way down to her boots. The top is black with no sleeves. She’s got some kind material wrapped around her elbow down to her hands. She’s holding a sword like weapon in her right hand. The design on the upper portion of the boots looks like it spirals around her lower leg down to her ankle.
Overall, it’s a decent first try from Funko. The hair color needed to be much brighter similar to the picture on the outside of the box. The coloring of her costume could’ve used a bit more punch to make it stand out. This Pop is pretty bland minus the green skin. The new Gamora Pop looks much more vibrant and alive. If they would’ve used similar colors on this Pop I would have enjoyed it much more.
What’s next? The next Gamora Pop is numbered 199 and can be found in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set which is available in stores right now. It hasn’t been revealed if we’ll be getting multiple versions of Gamora in this set but I hope there’s at least one new variation. Look for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to hit theaters on the first weekend of May followed by some San Diego Comic Con exclusive announcements shortly after.
Gamora should also be in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War set due out in spring 2018. Stay tuned to Pop Vinyls which will be reporting on all of the new MCU stories.
