Welcome to Flashback Friday: The MCU. In this series you’ll get a review and discussion on some of your favorite Pops and Dorbz from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here, we really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming.
“I am Iron Man.” Those four words helped launch the entire MCU which in turn helped launch the MCU characters into Pop Vinyl form. Unfortunately, Funko was unable to give us Iron Man and Iron Man 2 sets. Because of this, our first taste of Iron Man in pop form is from the Avengers set which debuted in 2011 alongside the record breaking film.
From the beginning of the film Iron Man sports his trademark red and gold suit. The suit is covered in red paint around the body with two areas on the biceps that are gold. There are two small gold lines coming out of the chest piece. The arc chest piece is painted white instead of the bluish tint we see in the film. The arc on one of the suits in the film is circular and another is an upside down triangle shape. They elected to go with the circular shape on the first pop. The knees are painted silver with a gold trim surrounding the silver. You can see these patterns when Iron Man bends his knees. The majority of the helmet is painted red with the gold on the front of the face. The eyes are painted black which makes the face look really odd because the eyes in the film and in subsequent Iron Man pops are white. Overall, I think the design from film to pop isn’t that good. The paint job isn’t great but it’s adequate. The color of the eyes really bug me though so it’s definitely not my favorite Iron Man pop.
Since Iron Man (11) was released six years ago it’s not going to be available in stores. According to Funko’s own website the pop has been vaulted. Iron Man can easily be found on eBay and Amazon. The current price to purchase varies on condition of figure and box but you’re looking to pay at least quadruple the original retail value. $50.00 for a mint to near mint box and figure is a good deal. Recent sales on eBay have been as high as $100.00 so anything around half of that is looking pretty good.
