On Friday, I finally had some time to go see the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest origin story, Doctor Strange. Knowing that members of the general public wouldn’t be so enthusiastic about an obscure character know only to comic-readers, I wasn’t expecting much, but I thought it turned out to be one of the year’s best superhero movies (second only to Civil War, of course). And as if the movie itself wasn’t good enough, it came with an awesome series of Pops, the centerpiece of which was the Sorcerer Supreme himself.
This Pop was extremely impressive, and one of the most detailed ones I have seen to date. While Benedict Cumberbatch’s long face shape might not be ideal for Funko’s signature chibi style, the designers did a great job of capturing the character’s appearance from the movie, especially in the detail of the hair. The pattern on the tunic also looked great, and I was particularly impressed by the paint quality on the belt and pendant, which did not bleed into any of the wrong areas or mix with other colors even though very small elements were included.
If I had to come up with one flaw I found in this figure, it would be the goatee. There was a little bit of paint bleeding into the mouth and central cheek areas, and the mustache also looked a bit bushy. I think the comic-style Doctor Strange Pop did a better job of capturing his classic facial hair. While these problems were slightly annoying, however, they didn’t detract from all the great qualities of the figure.
I’m rating this Pop 9/10. With the holidays coming up, it would make a great gift for any friends and family who are longtime MCU fans, Funko collectors, or diehard Cumberb**ches (apparently his fans actually call themselves that, but in the words of Kaecilius, who am I to judge?).
