Hello and welcome to a special Doctor Strange edition of Flashback Friday. Each week I’ll be bringing you a brand new article on a related pop or Dorbz that’s connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anything film or television related is fair game. I’ll be doing a short review and then moving on to my thoughts on the piece and series.
This is a special weekend for the MCU. Starting on Thursday the domestic release of the next highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange will hit theaters nationwide. Going into the weekend the film has earned amazing reviews which continues to increase its box office prospects. With such a great cast including Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius we have another MCU hit on deck.
The MCU is a colossal money making machine. Doctor Strange will be Funko’s tenth MCU line out of thirteen films released thus far. They continue to give us some incredible MCU pops and Dorbz and this set is no exception. I won’t be seeing the film until later in the weekend so instead of reviewing one piece I’m going to briefly cover the entire set of pops and Dorbz.
The set will release eight pops to coincide with the film release. Those pops include an early San Diego Comic Con 2016 Sorcerer Supreme holding a rune. This pop was later released at GameStop throughout the country and sold out pretty fast. Its current market value is $20-$30. The other seven pops which can be found in stores since late October are Doctor Strange (169), Karl Mordo (170), The Ancient One (171), Kaecilius (172), Doctor Strange (MCC Exclusive) (173), Doctor Strange (Wal-Mart Exclusive) (174), and Doctor Strange (Target Exclusive) (175). I’d expect more pops and variations to current pops to be released in the coming months.
The film also gets a decent initial release of Dorbz. They include Doctor Strange (206), Doctor Strange (Astral Projection) (GameStop) (206), Karl Mordo (207), Kaecilius (208), and Zealot (230). I’d also expect to see more Dorbz released in the future.
Comparing the trailers to the pops and Dorbz is the best I can do having not seen the film yet. Most of the pieces look spot on. The Astral Projection ones look a bit…strange however, the more I open my mind the better they look. I’m sure many fans and collectors will indeed enjoy these sets.
If you’re after any of these pops or Dorbz you can find them at your local Target, Wal-Mart, GameStop, Hot Topic, and any other stores where Funko products are sold. You could also check Amazon and eBay especially for the SDCC pop. Each item is currently going for normal retail value except the SDCC pop. Don’t forget that the latest MCC box focuses on the Sorcerer Supreme and it’s pretty great. As always please check out our Facebook group which can be found here for all of your collection needs. If you’re after any of these items you’ll definitely find an abundant selection from our marvelous community.
