5 Halloween-themed Movies POP! Funko Should Do
(But Haven’t)

The Halloween trilogy concludes!  After covering horror movies and Halloween television specials, it’s time to explore Halloween-themed movies that Funko has not yet done as POP!s.

For over half a century now, studios have put out Halloween-based movies to audiences both young and old.  Everything from happy children’s fare to gruesome horror films have graced the silver screens against the backdrop of Halloween.  If you’re looking for a film to put you in that Halloween spirit, guaranteed you’ll be able to find something to enthrall your interests.

Kudos to Funko!  They realized that fans want these characters from Halloween-themed films and have released POP! figures featuring them from various feature films like Trick ‘R Treat, Halloween, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc.  Yet, a plethora of beloved characters still sit in limbo.

Which means, dear readers, the time has come once again to address the elephant in the room.  Here are 5 POP! Funko lines Funko has yet to announce or release (but should).

As usual, these lists are subjective and you may have a completely different opinion on the matter, and that’s fine. Also, I should specifically mention that this list only consists of films made for the silver screen as a list of television Halloween specials made up the previous list.  If something you think should have made the list but didn’t, feel free to sound off below.

5) The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

As one of the most consistent and long running lines for Funko POP!, Disney has already released a wide range of characters from their catalog of characters, and even some from their darker corners such as Fantasia’s Chernabog.  As such, knowing Disney has no fear in regards to releasing older and darker characters, I’m hoping for an eventual release of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman from their 1949 package movie.  The Horseman would make for a great addition to the POP! Rides line especially.

4) Trick or Treat (Donald Duck short)

Trick or Treat, one of Disney’s earlier releases from the 1950s, played before certain RKO films during Halloween.  Today, it stands as a great example of Disney’s mid-twentieth century contributions to animation.

But the nephews dressed in their Halloween costumes steal the show in their striking costumes.  Costumed as a devil, a witch, and a ghost respectively, Huey, Duey, and Louie steal the show.

I often notice Disney uses segments of scenes from this short, especially ones featuring the triplets, in promotional material for the Disney Channel every Halloween, and why not?  The looks are pretty iconic.  I find it strange that Funko has yet to even release POP!s of the three ducklings, but, if they do, I’m hoping for these Halloween variants.

3) Donnie Darko

With so much science fiction and weirdness abound, one might even forget that the film Donnie Darko takes place on Halloween.  Yet, it does and the holiday actually takes center stage for its doomsday plot.  In fact, without spoiling one of the many twists of the film, “evil bunny” Frank ties directly into the holiday.  Given Frank’s twisted bunny likeness and Donnie’s skeleton Halloween costume as iconic symbols from the movie, Funko POP!-ized versions should look very distinguishable as the characters.

2) Halloween III: Season of the Witch

Halloween III?  But Funko POP! has alrady done the Halloween franchise.  Yes, they have.  But Halloween III does not continue the Halloween franchise.  In fact, Halloween and Halloween II only got referenced as actual movies within Halloween III.

I’m just assuming non-fans of the film just elicited a “Huh?”

Originally, the series meant to continue onward as an anthology series without connections to either past or future “installments”.  The first movie of this new direction developed into Halloween III… and it financially flopped.  As such, Michael’s story continued once again in Halloween IV (the third installment), and Halloween III stood alone, garnering an intense fan base over the next few decades.

The weirdness of the film doesn’t stop with the back story.  So, without Michael, what was the plot?  Well, that’s a loose topic.  Essentially it involves witchcraft, robots, and the obliteration of children and nuclear families.  The ridiculous plot had a strong camp, dark, and fun sense about it, which made for a large group of fans to develop over the next few decades.

The characteristics of the film’s central masks as the Witch, the Pumpkin, and the Skull would look great as a POP!.    Considering they play a vital role in the film’s most iconic and horrific imagery, I suspect many fans would agree.

1) Hocus Pocus

Because no Halloween can exist without Hocus Pocus!

Something of a commercial failure of a kids’ Halloween Movie from 1993, the film has since continued onto cult status due to annual airings on various networks (but mostly the Disney Channel).  In case you haven’t seen it (both of you), the film centers on a typical evil witch story set amidst ‘90s teen angst.  It makes for an usual, but entertaining, viewing.

The most memorable characters in Hocus Pocus, however, are not the protagonists.  Winifred Sanderson and her incapable, yet evil sisters Sarah and Mary steal the movie easily from the somewhat bland teens and kids by chewing on the scenery constantly.  No one really cares about the heroes in this one, save for maybe the talking cat, but, when you hear a fan quote the film (and you probably have), it’s most likely a Sanderson quote.

With Disney supposedly testing interest for a future Hocus Pocus installment, releasing a set of the three witches would be an ideal way to do so.

Well, dear readers, that’s all for now.  Until next time…
