Welcome to Flashback Friday: The MCU. In this series you’ll get a review and discussion on some of your favorite Pops and Dorbz from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We really appreciate the shared universe so the figures will come from film, television, and streaming. Today I’ll be discussing a fan favorite character from Phase I of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was so popular with the fans that after they killed him off he was brought back to life for Marvel’s television division. Please welcome Agent Coulson who stars in his very own Marvel TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. currently airing its fourth season on ABC.
Agent Phil Coulson played by Clark Gregg was first introduced to audiences in the original Iron Man film released in 2008. Coulson quickly became a fan favorite due to his quirky nature and funny interactions with various superheroes. Gregg reprised the role of Agent Coulson in Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Avengers. Once the Coulson character was killed off in the film verse he was revived for Marvel’s first television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The first Agent Coulson Pop was released in 2014 and is numbered 53 in the Marvel Pop Series. The box indicates a part of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. line which at the time of release was the only pop in that line. We now have Agent May and Daisy Johnson AKA Skye, AKA Quake as part of that line. In 2015 Funko released another Coulson pop but it’s from the Pop Rides line of items. For anyone that watches the show you’ll be very familiar with Lola (Coulson’s flying convertible). The large box is also part of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. line and is numbered 12 in the Pop Rides series. Lola also comes with an Agent Coulson variation pop in the vehicle.
Agent Coulson numbered 53 in the series is sporting some very secret agent like sunglasses with a Bluetooth in his right ear. He has a very sharp looking blue suit with a light blue collared shirt under the jacket. The tie is striped with blue colors. Black shoes that all agents would wear finishes off his day to day outfit. To round out the Pop in style he’s got a Phil Coulson I.D. badge on the left side of his jacket. It has the real MCU image of Clark Gregg’s character. I think the piece looks really good. Everything pretty much matches what we’ve seen in the films and TV show. The only minor issue I have is the sunglasses. I think they could look quite a bit more realistic. I hope Funko address that in the future.
Agent Coulson with Lola looks exactly the same except he’s wearing a gray suit. Lola on the other hand looks amazing. The vehicle feels like it was pulled right out of the show. The coloring looks fantastic and the details are really crisp. The tires fold downward which allows the vehicle to hover above the ground. There’s a clear stand underneath the vehicle which gives off the illusion Lola is hovering. The license plate even says Lola just like the show. This is a great piece and one of my favorites in the Pop Rides series for Marvel.
Even though the Agent Coulson Pop 53 has been out for a couple of years you can still find him in plenty of stores. The average price right now is about $6.00 or $7.00 dollars. You’ll probably end up paying a bit more in stores but he can be purchased pretty cheap on eBay. Director Coulson with Lola is a bit more expensive like most Pop Rides. You can find this item in some stores for $20.00 to $30.00. He averages in the low 20s so it’s definitely not a bad price. I’ve seen Lola within the last few months at Hot Topic and Barnes and Noble.
