Since 1949 LEGO has been inspiring children’s imagination and since 1969 Scooby-Doo has been a pop culture icon with new series and movies keeping him in the spotlight. So when these two come together it was sure to set off many people’s nostalgia. With the premier of Scooby-Doo’s first LEGO animated special this Wednesday on Cartoon Network we thought it would be a great time to look at one of the LEGO Scooby-Doo sets, The Mystery Mansion.
Before we get to the review here are a few details on this set.
- This is set #75904
- Set consist of 860 pieces
- SRP is $89.99
- Set includes 6 Minifigures or 7 if you count Scooby-Doo
- Set includes 1 vehicle
- This is the only Scooby-Doo set Velma is available in
Now that we have the details out of the way onto the review!
The box does a good job of showing off the set and minifigures. The front shows a great scene with images of the included minifigures on the side. The back does a great job of showing off each room of the set and the features the playset has.
Inside the box the pieces come in nine bags. The top of the house is one solid piece and is loose in the box. The three instruction books and the sticker sheet are in a separate bag.
Minifigures: 5/5
To most people the highlight of the LEGO sets are the minifigures and these are some of the best! Each figure(except for Scooby) has two different expressions. For the Meddling Kids one face is a normal smiling face and the other is frightened face. The “Monsters” feature their disguise or mask on one side and the other face is the unmasked version. The Ghost also has a neat feature, he glows in the dark!
Accessories and Vehicle: 3.5/5
Each minifigure(excluding Scooby and the Vampire) has one accessory. Except Velma she get’s two accessories! Velma has a magnifying glass that actually does magnify. Her other accessory is the clue. If you look at it it actually will help solve the mystery of the Mystery Mansion. Shaggy comes with a generic LEGO hotdog so nothing really special there. Daphne comes with a camera that is pretty neat. The Black Knight Ghost(fun fact he is from the first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? entitled What A Night For A Knight.) has an axe. It comes in three pieces that you have to assemble. The Ghost comes with the same accessory that many other LEGO Ghost come with the prisoner ball and chain.
I do have to say I am disappointed that they didn’t include a box of Scooby Snax. It is one of the main things you think of when you think of Scooby-Doo. They were used in nearly every episode to get Scooby and sometimes Shaggy to do something they didn’t want to. Just seems like an oversight to me.
The vehicle included in the set is a nice mini build. The motorcycle and side car are done up in the same colors as the Mystery Machine. It holds two minifigs perfectly. You would think it would be made for Shaggy and Scooby, but sadly Scooby doesn’t fit the side car.
Playset: 4.5/5
The playset is a great dilapidated old haunted house. It features six rooms and has two action features. First let’s take a look at the action features.
The front of the house features a balcony with a clock overhead. Turning the hand of the clock turns the wall on the balcony. One side has a vampire bat and the other has a space for the Vampire. Turning the hand on the clock will simulate the bat turning into the Vampire and is a neat feature.
The other feature is the spiked ball trap in the main room. Just turn the handle to set up the trap. Set a figure in the main room and turn the handle down to send the figure flying out the door when the spiked ball hits them. Sounds very painful.
The spiked ball trap is in place to guard the secret in the main room. Hidden underneath the floor board is a key.
Before we go on to what the key is for let’s take a look at the painting in the main room. It contains a clue to the mystery of the mansion.
Hmmm.. a prospector with gold. The painting is a sticker. While I am not to big a fan of applying stickers this one didn’t bother me too much.
Now on to that key!
Of course the key is for the safe inside of the safe room. The safe is a nice build. It has bars on front with a little lock. Open that and there is another door to open and inside that is the mystery of the mansion. Hidden gold bars.
Now let’s take a look at Scooby and Shaggy’s favorite room, the kitchen!
The kitchen is a pretty good size and has enough room for Shaggy and Scooby. The cabinets and stove opens and close. There is a hamburger on the counter. Why they would eat food from an old house is beyond me. The cabinet has a sticker to give it a dirty stained look. There is even a LEGO rat to roam around the floor.
The attic of the house holds the casket for the Vampire. The casket opens and the Vampire fits perfectly inside.
Now on to my favorite room of the set.
The green house. Inside of the green house has a buildable Man Eating Plant. I like to pretend it is Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. Also inside the green house is two jack-o-lanterns. The one on the windowsill is on a rotating base so you can easily have it facing inside or outside.
From the outside you will see that some of the windows are broken. A couple of the windows have stickers that show a couple of man eating plants and jack-o-lantern hybrids.
Overall: 4.5
This is the most expensive LEGO set I have ever bought. If it wasn’t for my love of Scooby-Doo I don’t think I could have justified that price. This set is a must have for any Scooby-Doo fan, or anyone who wants the complete Scooby Gang as this is the only one Velma is included with. The set is also a great centerpiece for a Halloween display. So if you are a fan of Scooby-Doo or Monsters this set is for you!
