This past weekend at New York Comic Con, Titan Merchandise debuted the newest collection of Titan Minis from the successful Doctor Who line: the “Regeneration Collection”. I must say, when they originally announced this line, I was not a fan. However, that all changed when I saw the figures in person. What started out as four blind boxes quickly turned into more, especially given that Matthew Buss, Merchandise Manager for Titan, and the rest of the gang allowed me to trade for the ones I was missing for ones I had doubles of. Pretty soon, I am proud to say that I have the full set (one that Matt believes is the first, if not only). Sweet. Let’s take a look.
The Regeneration Collection
The premise of this set, according to Titan, is that the set “features every numbered Doctor as they look in their first (and in one case last) appearances”. To be honest with you all, I am still trying to play catch up with the current series (on Season 6 with 11 and the Ponds). Where needed, I asked questions.
As with all of the Titan blind boxed sets, each figure has a specific ratio. In this newest collection, the ratios are either 2/20 (2 per case), 1/20 (1 per case), or 1/40 (1 per two cases). Here are the ratio breakdowns.
As you can see, six of the characters are two per case, six are one per case, and four are one per two cases. These last four are the ones with the question marks instead of images, and are called “chasers”, given that you will not get one of each of them per case.
For this review, let’s start by looking at the 2/20 ratios: 1st Doctor, 4th Doctor, 10th Doctor, 12th Doctor, and River Song. As usual, these higher ratios are given to the more popular characters of the set, those being the most iconic Doctors, the newest Doctor, and River, who was the Doctor’s wife.
Next come the 1/20 characters, with are the rest of the Doctors, minus the 9th Doctor (more on that in a bit).
Finally we have the four “chasers”, including my favorite, the 9th Doctor.
First, we have a Black & White version of the 1st Doctor, which celebrates how the world always saw the 1st Doctor on television.
Next, we have what the 9th Doctor would have looked like if he was shown on screen in his first appearance, that which donned the clothes of the War Doctor.
Up next is Rose’s Doctor, the replicate version of the 10th Doctor that was left with Rose on the beach.
Lastly, we have the 12th Doctor is his purple outfit from when he was reincarnated from the 11th Doctor.
Well, there you have it: all 16 of the “Regeneration Collection” series. To date, I think this might be one of the standout sets for me, behind the “Geronimo Collection”. I love the inclusion of River Song and the 9th Doctor in the War Doctor attire. Of course, being able to having the likeness of Peter Capaldi mere weeks after he officially started as the Doctor is great. Also, one of the standout sculpts is that of the 8th Doctor, played by Paul McGann. A lot of people loved seeing him back in the saddle as the Doctor back in 2013 (after only being in a movie as the title role in the late 90’s). A lot of people, McGann included, signed a petition to see a spin off series come back with McGann as the Doctor once more. It never happened, but if nothing else, McGann was shown that the Whovians still loved and respected him.
The “Regeneration Collection” will be arriving in stores here in the US within the next couple of months. However, you can place your pre-order for this set, as well as some of the other awesome Titan Minis sets, over with our friends at Entertainment Earth. Hello, Sweetie.
Stay tuned next week as i take a look at more fun stuff from the NYCC 2014 Titan booth, including the 8″ Tranzalone Tardis, the 6.5″ 12th Doctor, and the 3″ Exclusive Homeless 12th Doctor.
Special thanks to Matthew Buss and the rest of the guys at Titan Merchandise for taking the time this weekend to chat and trade Doctor Who. Looking forward to next year.
