Welcome to Flashback Friday where I discuss pops from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anything pop related to the MCU is up for discussion including films and television series. Let’s jump right in with this week’s discussion. Ego from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set is this week’s featured MCU Pop.

#205 Ego

Discussion: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was released in the spring of 2017 and it became a very successful follow-up to the unlikely triumph of the first film. One of the more interesting choices in the sequel was to introduce Ego which in the comics is a living planet. James Gunn took that inspiration from the comic and morphed it into his own creation. I’m going into spoilers because the film has been out for over a year. Kurt Russell was cast as the human form of Ego which turned out to be the father of Star-Lord. As you can imagine this caused all sorts of drama and trust issues between several characters. They took the family dynamic from the first film and expanded on it ten-fold. When it gets revealed that Ego actually ends up being the antagonist of the film he kind stops using his human form and starts attacking the heroes with actual parts of the planet. I don’t know if they’ll ever do a planet variation of Ego for the MCU or from the comics but I’d imagine it would be a very interesting looking piece.

Ego was released in 2017 and only has one variation thus far. He was not an exclusive which means he was available everywhere Pops were sold. I don’t expect to see anymore Ego Pops related to the MCU unless they bring the character back in a future movie. Since Ego was widely available and production as far as I know is still happening, his price is as reasonable as you’d expect. Most of the sales I see on eBay are between the $5.00 to $10.00 range. You should definitely be able to pick up Ego for under $10.00 from a variety of outlets. The design of Ego is fantastic and resembles the film version almost perfectly. If someone asked me if there was a Pop that looked like Kurt Russell this is definitely that Pop.

Trivia: Be the first to comment with the correct answers to both questions and win. If you become the weekly champion you must choose a Pop within the MCU that has not been featured in the Flashback Friday series and post it after your answers. The questions are from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Q1: What is the name of Star-Lord’s mother?

Q2: What’s the name of the song when Ego is driving at the beginning of the movie?

I hope you enjoyed this week’s column. Please check back next week for a brand new Flashback Friday and don’t forget to join our Facebook group. Excelsior!
