Last week, we shared with you the inaugural  subscription box from Funko and Marvel, Collector Corps. I had many people ask me how does it compare to the current champ of the subscription boxes, Loot Crate. With the Manny Pacquiao/Floyd Mayweather fight coming up, it got me to thinking who would win one on one? So let’s check out “the Tale of the Tape!” between the April editions of Loot Crate and Marvel Collector Corps.

Warning! If you are the type who gets in a hissy fit because you find out what’s in a subscription box, leave this review now.

First thing we should say is that Loot Crate is a monthly service whereas the Marvel Collector Corps comes out every other month. The monthly rate for Loot Crate is roughly $20 after shipping. The bi-monthly Collector Corps costs you $32 including shipping. Take this into account when comparing both. Also, I am in no way compensated by either company to write reviews. This is just my opinion. You may agree or disagree. Ring the bell! Let’s get it on!

April Loot Crate

You can click each photo below to see the contents. The theme was fantasy. You got a Dungeons and Dragons shirt, a guide to this month’s box, a bow tie, Princess Bride playing cards, Harry Potter luggage tag, Game of Thrones magnets, Game of Thrones flash drive,  and an inflatable crown. Okay, I could make fun of that silly crown all day but hey, my 4 yr old liked it. I don’t like Dungeons and Dragons so I won’t comment on that. The shirt is pretty thin though. I don’t wear bow ties even if they are cool. I do love The Princess Bride cards and the Harry Potter 9 3/4 luggage tag. My daughter is currently on her way to Washington D.C. so I should say she loved the luggage tag..because she stole it. For me, I had two things I enjoy which isn’t the best ratio but it happens. I always need a new flash drive so the Game of Thrones one will add to my collection. It’ll definitely stand out in my office drawer when I’m looking for one.

April Collector Corps

The box is a lot larger than this month’s box but Loot Crate’s size changes each month. When you first open the box you get the exclusive patch and Captain America pin. I can’t wait to keep adding to these each month. The biggest part of the Corps is the Hulkbuster which is without a doubt the most detailed Pop ever made. It’s very heavy as well. Next we got the first ever release of a Dorbz vinyl figure which happens to be of Ultron. Each box has 1 of 4 exclusive designs. Basically, they all look the same except your shirt might feature Captain America, The Hulk, Iron Man, or Thor. I might add that the quality of the shirt is better than the Loot Crate one.  Finally, you get the variant comic. I’m not the biggest comic book guy, but the artwork looks great. The most important part I felt was that there wasn’t anything in the box that was “filler.” Every item fit the Avengers theme and was something that I saw value in.

Who Wins?

The Collector Corps debuts by knocking out the reigning champ of subscription boxes. The bar has been raised for what I expect from a subscription service. The Collector Corps is 100% exclusive and that adds even more value to me. To be fair to Loot Crate their themes are pretty broad which means you will please a lot of people but at the same time upset others. With the Collector Corp, you know from the get go that it will appeal to Marvel and Funko fans. This might narrow your audience but it will also raise your chances for satisfaction. For me personally, I’ve been burned by far too many lackluster Loot Crate offerings to make that mistake again. If you have to choose between these two, go with the Marvel Collector Corps. If you would like to subscribe to Loot Crate click here. If you would like to sign up for the Marvel Collector, follow this link and you can still get the April box.
