There’s a new monthly subscription box out there on the market: Geek Fuel. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the team from Geek Fuel started in December supplying monthly subscriptions to customers in the US, Canada, and the UK.
According to their Kickstarter campaign, “Each box will include at least 6-8 items. From time to time we may make the decision to add an item of higher value which may cause the total number of items in a box to change. Our boxes will always be curated on quality, not quantity.” So far, two boxes have been released: the Mystery Bonus Box, or “Alpha Box” from the Kickstarter campaign, and the December 2014 box. Here is our review of the “Alpha Box”, which the Geek Fuel team sent over to us to take a look at.
What I noticed off the bat was that they take pride in their presentation, if nothing else. The items are surrounded and “sealed” in a metallic silver paper. It might not be much, but it felt like you were opening up a gift rather than just a subscription box.
Inside the box were a number of fun things. Let’s take a look:
Armor Hunter #1– Variant Cover by Valiant
While I am not necessarily a comic book collector, I appreciate it when a comic book company teams up with a subscription box to provide variants to collectors. This metallic variant of Armor Hunters #1 is well done, and very shiny.
The Princess Bride Playing Cards– Albino Dragon
This is a pretty sweet custom set of playing cards from the team over at Albino Dragon, who specializes in creating unique themed card decks. What I love about this deck is the artwork on the court cards. Some beautiful designs, and each card unique.
Halo Alpha Mega Bloks Mystery Pack– Mega Bloks
I was not surprised to see the Alpha mystery pack from the Halo Mega Bloks line inside the Alpha box. Each mystery pack contains 1 of 8 figures. I got the Storm Grunt.
Eye of Sauron Poster– Kitchen Overlord
Looking for a fun little snack for guests at your next Lord of the Rings themed party? Why not make the Eye of Sauron, part of Kitchen Overlord’s new cook book “An Unexpected Cookbook: The Unofficial Cookbook of Hobbit Cookery”. I think this poster will be hung in my kitchen, and will be used. The recipe looks yummy!
Star Wars PEZ Candy– PEZ
Love me some Star Wars PEZ. Got C-3PO in my box.
Limited Edition/ Numbered Alpha T-Shirt
Limited and numbered to only 300, this special edition shirt is a great gift to those who participated in the special Kickstarter. Geek Fuel plans on releasing a t-shirt in most of their boxes (the Dec. 2014 box have a Princess Leia Sugar Skull shirt, which looked pretty sweet.
In addition to the actual items, the box also came with a Geek Fuel mini mag (similar to Loot Crate’s), a Postcard, and a sticker showing off their robot mascot.
All in all, I think this was a very fun subscription box to go through. I love the playing cards and the cookbook poster especially.
So, how much will a Geek Fuel subscription set you back? A little more than a Loot Crate subscription. Here are the subscription tiers from their site:
For those of you who are wondering, here are the contents of the December 2014 box.
Is it worth it? Some, like myself, would like it because of the offbeat and fun things in it. Others who are subscribing because of guaranteed items like Funko products or something else would not like this box. Overall, for around $20 a month, it’s a fun little thing to do. I personally will be subscribing to the January box… the team at Geek Fuel shows a lot of promise.
Happy New Year.
