Back when I met with Funko at last year’s Toy Fair, I was shown something that they were very excited about: Cupcakes.
The concept of the collection came to Brian via his teenage daughter, who is an avid baker. The generic cupcake head is designed to resemble a character, in the case Mickey or Snow White. In addition, the sculpted bodies and accessories such as ears and hair pieces can come off and be stored in the hollow head, leaving just a cupcake to display. I was told at that time that we wold see something in 2012. However, the year ended and nothing hit the shelves. I entered the Funko showroom on Sunday expecting to ask questions regarding the Cupcakes and this is what I found:
Apparently, they weren’t quite as dead as I thought they were. Coming out in May 2013, Disney Cupcakes Series 1 features 11 beloved Disney characters, each complete with its’ own dessert stand.

A few changes were done from the original designs. First, the dessert stand was added in order to showcase the cupcake shape and give it more of a collectible feel. Second, the “frosting” tops are now molded with a translucent glittery material, giving the cupcake a more magical feel. I must say, comparing the two Mickeys, the new design with the subtle small changes, looks like a higher end collectible.
Here are some more pics of the figures lit up while on display at the Funko booth.
As far as pricing, expect to see a MSRP around $12.99, which includes the custom named and colored dessert stands.
There are hopes and plans to bring create more Cupcake based series using other properties. Out of what Funko has in their ever growing wheelhouse, what would you like the next Cupcake Keepsake series to be?
